Best of Broadway Edinburgh Fringe 2022 theSpace Triplex 5th August Review
American Performing Arts International made a welcome return to Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2022 at theSpace@Symposium Hall with their ever popular Best of Broadway show. Like its sister show, Best of The West End, this show does exactly what it says on the ticket and poster and delivers some of the best known stage musical hits from Broadway shows.
After missing two years because of Covid restrictions, American Performing Arts International are obviously all very happy to be back at the Fringe and are, as usual, on top form. Megan, Kristin, David, Rex, Cam, and Preston are world-class professional performers, and as always on stage delivered these songs so well. This show has once again worked its magic for me as they brought the songs of these amazing Broadway musicals to life.
One of the things I like about APAI’s shows is that all the members get to perform solo numbers as well as singing the wonderful harmonies that are produced when two or more of them get together, and this show was no exception to that. The fact that each singer has a different vocal range is used to full effect here as performers’ song selections are carefully matched to best suit their vocals. Many of these songs are well known for their very distinctive melodies and harmonies and having this range of distinctive vocal types is essential to get the very best out of many of these songs, and the APAI team always seem to not only manage that often difficult task, but to make it look so effortless and natural.
There was something for all ages here, ranging from Broadway Melody and There’s No Business Like Show Business, with The Wizard of Oz merging into Wicked, and more recent musicals including Dear Evan Hansen, and Waitress. The show included a heart-felt tribute to the late Stephen Sondheim, who died last year at the age of 91, and ended with all six performers harmonising beautifully on You’ll Never Walk Alone. If you like musical theatre, then you’ll love this show.
